Ninety minutes of rain, two good saves and a crossbar. Harbour City and Kingsbridge Athletic shared the points at The Quay on Saturday, and neither dressing room was happy about it.

City stay sixth. Kingsbridge stay fifth. The gap between them and the top three grew by two points each, because everyone above them won.

Ruth-Anne Gilchrist's save from Ade Balogun, the best moment of a grey afternoon.

## A game of two keepers

It was not a bad game. It was a game where the goalkeepers were better than the strikers, which is a different thing.

Kingsbridge had the better first half. Ade Balogun, their centre-forward, should have scored after eight minutes when Harbour City's defence stepped up in a line and forgot to take him with them. He had the whole of the goal to aim at and chose the part where Ruth-Anne Gilchrist's left hand was. It was a remarkable save, and Gilchrist, who has been City's second-choice keeper for three seasons, played the rest of the afternoon like somebody who had been waiting a long time to show what she could do.

At the other end, Kingsbridge's Pavel Nowak made two saves in the second half from Harbour City's captain, Liam Tolan, one with his feet and one at full stretch. The second was the better. Tolan hit it well, low and hard towards the far corner, and Nowak seemed to arrive before the ball did.

## The crossbar

The closest anyone came was the crossbar in the seventy-fourth minute. Kingsbridge won a free kick thirty yards out. Everyone at The Quay expected a cross. Sami Rahman, a midfielder with one goal in two seasons, decided to shoot instead, and the ball hit the bar so hard that the rain came off it in a sheet.

> I've never hit one better. I'll never hit one better. And it's still nil-nil.
>

After that, the game became a matter of not losing. Both managers made changes that were about shape, not goals. Harbour City brought on a third centre-back. Kingsbridge brought on a defensive midfielder. The last ten minutes were played almost entirely in the middle third of a heavy pitch.

## Why neither side is happy

For Harbour City, this was a home game against a direct rival, and home games against direct rivals are the ones you win if you want to finish in the top four. They have drawn four of their nine games. Their manager, Colin Arkwright, has asked for a new striker all summer, and on this evidence he still needs one.

For Kingsbridge, it was a chance missed to go level on points with Northgate in fourth. Their away form has been good, but they have scored only once in their last three games, and Balogun's miss in the eighth minute is the kind of thing that keeps a manager awake.

📊

Harbour City have now kept four clean sheets, the most in the league. They have also scored only ten goals, the fewest in the top half.

## The numbers

| | Harbour City | Kingsbridge |
| ---------- | ------------ | ----------- |
| Shots | 11 | 9 |
| On target | 4 | 3 |
| Possession | 54% | 46% |
| Corners | 6 | 4 |
| Fouls | 12 | 14 |

## The keeper question

The most interesting thing to come out of the afternoon may be Gilchrist. Harbour City's first-choice keeper, Owen Marsh, is fit again after a hamstring injury. Arkwright was asked after the game who will play next week.

"Ask me on Friday," he said. That usually means he already knows, and that somebody is going to be disappointed.

## What's next

Harbour City go to Elmwood, who are third and scoring for fun. Kingsbridge are at home to Castleford Wanderers, who are nineteenth of ten in confidence, if not in the table. If Kingsbridge cannot score against Castleford, they will not score against anyone.

## Arkwright's striker problem

Harbour City's problem is not new. Last season they scored thirty-one goals in eighteen league games, and their top scorer, Ryan Dobbs, left for a club in the division above in June. The two strikers who replaced him, both on loan, have one goal between them. Arkwright spent most of Saturday on the edge of his technical area with his arms folded, and he spent most of his press conference talking about the January window.

"We create enough," he said. "We don't finish enough. That's not a secret, and it's not going to be solved by me shouting at the lads." The chairman was in the stand. He left before the press conference.

## The supporters

The Quay was quiet for long periods, and it is hard to blame the crowd. It rained from the first minute to the last, the wind came straight off the water, and for most of the afternoon there was very little to shout about. The loudest cheer of the day was for Gilchrist's save in the eighth minute. The second loudest was for the half-time announcement that the tea bar had run out of pies and would be giving out free coffee instead.

#### Is Owen Marsh fit to play?

The club says yes. He trained fully on Thursday.

#### Where is The Quay?

Harbour City's ground is on the old dock road, a ten-minute walk from the station.
