The summer transfer window is open, and half the Northern League is already busy. We looked at every club's last season and picked the five most urgent needs, and the kind of player who would fill each one.

Scouting reports: most of the work is done at a desk. Summer deals start in March.

## 1\. Harbour City need a striker

The most obvious need in the league. Harbour City had the best defence in the top half and the worst attack: ten goals in their last nine games. Their manager, Colin Arkwright, has asked for a striker since April. They need a forward who can score from small chances, because their style creates few big ones.

## 2\. Castleford need a leader

Castleford Wanderers lose games late. Last season, they were level or ahead after seventy minutes in five of their defeats. That is partly fitness and partly experience. An older centre-back or midfielder who has seen relegation fights before would help more than any young star.

## 3\. Rovers need a back-up left-back

Riverside Rovers finished second with a thin squad. Their left-back, Jordan Mills, played every minute. If he is injured, they have no natural replacement. A cheap, reliable loan player would be the smartest signing of the window.

## 4\. Millbrook need a goalkeeper

Millbrook concede too many soft goals. Their keeper is brave and good with his feet, but last season he made four mistakes leading to goals. In a team that scores freely, a safer goalkeeper could turn draws into wins.

## 5\. Ashford need a plan B

Ashford's high press is the best in the league, and it fails when opponents learn to play around it. They need a midfielder who can slow the game down and keep the ball when the press is beaten. Not a star. A calm passer.

## The budget problem

Most Northern League clubs have little money to spend. Many of these needs will be filled by loans, free agents and players released by bigger clubs. The clubs that scouted well in spring will find the bargains. The ones that start in August will pay more for less.

## The free agents

Every summer, dozens of good players are out of contract. For Northern League clubs, they are the best value in the market: no fee, and often a player with years of experience. The risk is fitness. A player released by a bigger club may have been injured, or may not have played much for a year.

💡

The smartest clubs offer free agents a short trial in pre-season before a contract. Two friendlies tell you more than any video.

Three players released by clubs in the division above are already training with Northern League teams this summer. Expect at least two of them to sign before August.

## What we expect

Expect Harbour City to spend the most, Rovers to make one smart loan, and Castleford to make three signings and hope. Expect at least one deadline-day surprise. There always is.
