For seventy minutes, Castleford Wanderers did everything right. They defended deep, they worked hard, and they scored the only goal of the game. Then, in twenty minutes that their supporters will want to forget, Elmwood scored four.

Castleford 1, Elmwood 4\. The score will look like a rout in the newspapers. It was not a rout. It was something stranger and, for Castleford, something worse.

## The plan that worked

Castleford started the day ninth of ten, with one win all season. Their manager, Stuart Heald, knew that Elmwood score more goals than anyone in the league except Rovers, and he set his team up accordingly: five at the back, four in front of them and a lone striker, Danny Oyelaran, who was asked to run until he could not run any more.

It worked beautifully. Elmwood had the ball for two-thirds of the first half and did almost nothing with it. Their best chance was a header from a corner that went over the bar. And six minutes before half-time, Castleford broke. Oyelaran won the ball in his own half, ran fifty yards with two defenders chasing him and shot across the keeper into the far corner.

Mill Lane went mad. It is a small ground and the noise stayed in it, as if the roof were holding it in.

## Twenty minutes

What happened next is hard to explain, even when you have watched it twice.

At seventy minutes, Castleford were still leading. Then Elmwood's manager, Tomasz Wiśniewski, made a double substitution: Nadia Kovač and Leo Barratt on, two quick forwards, for a midfielder and a centre-back. Elmwood went to three at the back and four up front.

Castleford's players had run for seventy minutes. Their legs had gone. And the gaps that had been closed all afternoon opened, one after another.

> We did everything right for seventy minutes. You can't defend for ninety against a team like that. Not with our squad.
>
> **Stuart Heald, Castleford Wanderers manager**

## The goals

The equaliser came on seventy-two minutes, from Barratt, a shot that deflected off a defender's heel. Four minutes later, Kovač ran behind a tired back line and lifted the ball over the keeper. On eighty-one minutes she did it again, almost exactly the same run, almost exactly the same finish. And in the last minute of normal time, Elmwood's captain, Marcus Ward, scored from a free kick that the keeper probably should have saved, but by then nobody in green was blaming anybody for anything.

## The numbers behind the collapse

| Period | Castleford shots | Elmwood shots | Distance run, Castleford |
| --------- | ---------------- | ------------- | ------------------------ |
| 0–35 min | 2 | 5 | 42.1 km |
| 36–70 min | 1 | 7 | 39.8 km |
| 71–90 min | 0 | 11 | 18.2 km |

The last line tells the story. In the final twenty minutes Castleford's players ran less than half as far as they had in each of the earlier periods. That is not a lack of effort. It is what happens when a team defends deep for an hour and a quarter.

💡

Elmwood have scored **nine** goals after the seventieth minute this season, the most in the league. Their substitutes have scored five of them.

## What now for Castleford?

Heald was asked whether he would change the plan. He said no. "It's the right plan. We need the legs to finish it." Castleford have one of the smallest squads in the league and the lowest wage bill, and the players who came on in the last twenty minutes were eighteen and nineteen years old.

They are four points from safety with half of the season to go. The supporters who stayed to clap their team off at the end seemed to believe that is enough. On this evidence, they may be right, as long as the game finishes after seventy minutes.

## Kovač, again

It is becoming a pattern. Nadia Kovač has now scored five goals this season, and every one of them has come after the seventieth minute. She has not started a league game. Wiśniewski was asked, again, whether she will start soon. "Why would I change the thing that works?" he said. "She is the most dangerous player in the league for twenty minutes. I don't know if she is for ninety, and I don't need to know yet."

Kovač herself was asked whether she minds. She shrugged. "I score goals. I don't mind when." She then spent twenty minutes signing autographs for children behind the goal at Mill Lane, most of whom were wearing Castleford shirts.

## The next test

Castleford's next four games are against teams in the bottom half. If Heald's plan is going to keep them in the league, those are the games where it needs to work, and where seventy good minutes should be enough. Against Elmwood, the problem was not the plan. It was that Elmwood's bench is better than Castleford's first eleven.

#### Who scored for Castleford?

Danny Oyelaran, a solo run and a shot across the keeper in the thirty-ninth minute.

#### Where are Elmwood in the table?

Third, five points behind Rovers.
